Description: This wood carving of an elephant depicts the natural elements of the indigenous island. Head of an elephant with tusks carved from part of a tree branch, the underside of the elephant resembles that of a mushroom. This elephant head carvingrepresents one of the many natural elements found on the tropical island of Jamaica.Wood carvings are frequently purchased by tourists visiting Caribbean islands.This artistic carving of an elephant was done by one of the local craftsmen who resides on the island.

What a difference a year makes...

Today I was thinking about my journey as a 50 year old grad student. I completed my master's degree about a year and a half ago and I really cannot believe how quickly I got done. Working and going to school full time was not easy; there were days when I got so depressed because I felt that it was too challenging. Getting home at eleven at night, staying awake to complete assignments, can I say difficult for an older person. I knew that I had no choice, it was the only way to stay current in this competitive workforce. My job prior was being stuck in a cubicle all day with little or no human contact; librarianship has changed my life. I love dealing with patrons, even the difficult ones. I love teaching classes and ordering for my assigned part of the collection. What a difference a year and a degree makes.

Part of my job as Librarian/Graphics Specialist is to create designs for various library events and campaigns. Steps to Success Homework Help was a logo that I designed using Corel Draw clip art and templates. The books forming steps, represents the academic development of children in every step of their education. Logo, brochure and flyer design for the New Rochelle Public Library. CorelDRAWX4 was the program that I used to design this campaign for the Home-Work Help program.

A few days ago I was thinking about graphic design books and stumbled upon this title Graphic Design and Religion by Daniel Kantor. I read some of the reviews on Amazon and I can't wait to buy this book for the library's collection. I did a search on World Cat and saw that it was cataloged with the religion section, Dewey 246. Nice!

NISO Publications National Information Standards Organization is a great resource for librarians, publishers and developers. I first learned about this resource while attending Grad school, I have been using it ever since. Some of the publications can be downloaded free of charge, some for a small fee. Their blog is very helpful.

Design Programs

Having spent most of my career in Advertising, one may think that I was always computer savvy. Well, think again, when I worked in Advertising I was a Senior Designer so I did a lot of thumbnails and layouts by hand. I would then give it to the computer artists with type specs, Pantone colors etc., and they would create from my initial vision. Fast forward to present time...I couldn't survive without the computer, I use Corel Draw, Illustrator, Photoshop CS5, Web content programs, Quark XPress et al. I still do thumbnails because I was trained that way. Doing my graphic design degree was the best thing in order to remain current in this world of social media.

My journey as the Graphics Specialist at a public library has been interesting so far, not what most may think. I actually get to create interesting pieces and some campaigns in between. I do everything from newsletters to logos, I bring my Advertising experience to this job.

Why Librarianship?

My career at a public library started in December 1998.
I was 40, and had just returned to New York from Trinidad and
was sure that I did not want to continue my career
in Advertising. I was hired by the library to run
a Business Center but that flopped. The director at
the time discovered that I was a seasoned graphic designer
and a position was created for me as the Library Graphics Specialist. I am the first person to hold this position at my job.
(I was also the page supervisor for about nine years)
I was provisional for 5 years before Albany
created a test for my position. In order to
keep my job, I had to place in the top three which I did.
There were a lot of challenges and that prompted me to
go back to school at 50, (Fibromyalgia and all) and get my Masters Degree in librarianship.So far I have no regrets about my decision. My job title is now Librarian Graphics Specialist.
